And when they met with Goliath and his army, they prayed: “Our Lord, pour upon us patience, and brace our feet, and help us against the disbelieving people”.
The disbelieving people not only include Goliath and his army, but also those who drank from the river and turned back from the fight. Through verses 3: 146-147, Lord consoles the believers who were wounded in the Battle of Uhud as: “And how many from Prophet fought with many proud representatives of Lord, they never became lost hearted in whatever they were affected in the path of Lord. They neither showed weakness nor surrendered before falsehood, and Allah likes those who are having patience; and their prayers were nothing except: ‘Our Lord! You forgive us our offenses and our excesses in our deeds, and You brace our feet and help us against the disbelieving people!’”. When Pharoah started to punish the sorcerers, who believed with Messenger Moses on seeing Lord’s Signs, they prayed as: “Our Lord! You pour patience upon us, and you take back us as Muslims who submitted wholly to You!” as told in verse 7: 126. Thus, they got killed by Pharoah and became martyrs in the way of the Lord. See explanation 2: 286; 9: 80-82 and 10: 85-86.
